BUSEGA – MPIGI EXPRESSWAY PROJECT

Location: The proposed Busega – Mpigi Expressway (23.7km) is located within the central region of Uganda. The Project area is located on the Northern Multimodal Corridor and it is expected to facilitate the logistics within GKMA and also improvement of traffic flow on the Northern Multimodal Corridor.

The Project starts at Busega (at the Kampala Entebbe Expressway approximately 12.5kms from Kampala City Center) and moves in a south-westerly direction following predominantly a greenfield to the northern side of the existing Kampala – Masaka Road up to Mpigi town. (Approximately 40km southwest of Kampala).

Scope: Geotechnical investigation for Detailed Engineering Design of the Busega – Mpigi expressway. The scope involved:

  • Drilling of fifty-one (51) geotechnical boreholes on both dry and wet (swamp) sections to the achievement of five consecutive Standard Penetration Test (SPT) refusals at the pier and abutment locations for supporting the different proposed bridges along the project, ground water monitoring and laboratory testing of the recovered representative soil and water samples.
  • Hand excavation of eleven (11) test pits.
  • Conducting Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) Testing at 500m intervals along the proposed road centreline.
  • Conducting hand auger boring at 1km intervals along the proposed road centreline and obtain disturbed samples.
  • Locating, sampling and laboratory testing for materials from potential construction material sources, i.e., gravel and rock.
  • Compiling a factual geotechnical investigations report

The field Investigations were carried out between the 3rd August and 4th September, 2019Core drilling was done using four drilling rigs; a French-make Crawler and self-driven remote-controlled rotary core drilling rig (APAGEO APAFOR 560), Chinese XY-150, XY-200 and GY-150T drilling rigs. Trial pits were excavated either by hand or by use of a backhoe excavator.
