Location: The proposed UVCC coffee processing plant is located within the Kampala Industrial and Business Park (in Mukono District) approximately 16km from Kampala town along the existing Kampala – Jinja Highway. The site perimeter is about 1.4km with an approximate coverage area of 27 acres.
The site is bound by Kyagulanyi coffee factory to its western side, Steel and tube industries to its southern side with new developments to its east and Bweyogerere Industrial Area Road (Old Jinja Road) to its north. A water channel runs behind the hoarding of the site’s western boundary.
Scope: The Geotechnical Investigations included:
- Hand excavation of eight (8) test pits for shallow foundations and mechanical boring of eleven (11) boreholes to depths of bearing ground for deep foundations.
- Hand excavation of five (5) test pits for subgrade studies of trafficked areas.
- Assessment of the strength of the soil profile through the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) at 1.5m intervals in each borehole.
- Recovery of disturbed samples at 1.5m intervals by the SPT split spoon sampler in each of the boreholes and 1 bulk sample from each of the five (5) test pits for trafficked areas.
- Recovery of at least one (1) undisturbed sample from the cohesive formations of each borehole where possible.
- Conducting Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) Testing at each of the test pit locations.
- Laboratory testing and analysis of suitable recovered disturbed and undisturbed soil and ground water samples.
- Compilation of a complete factual and interpretative geotechnical investigations report.
The field Investigations were carried out between the 5th and 13th March 2020. Core drilling was done using four drilling rigs: a French-make Crawler and self-driven remote-controlled rotary core drilling rig (APAGEO APAFOR 560), Chinese XY-150, XY-200 and GY-150T drilling rigs. Trial pits were excavated by hand.
